A UNIFEM pilot project in India is exploring relationships between masculinity, gender and violence. Implemented in partnership with Zonta International, NGOs and universities, the project seeks to initiate a debate on the role of masculinity and gender in socialization and development processes and to find positive role models that question the stereotypical notions of masculinity.
To share the findings from its work in this area, UNIFEM organized a workshop last month in New Delhi with women's groups and networks, UN agencies, bilateral donors, university members and the media. The NGO AAKAR gave an overview of the five multidisciplinary traveling seminars, undertaken to "Explore Masculinity" in collaboration with five universities in India. The workshop also featured a video presentation on resource directories in Kerala, Karanataka, West Bengal, Orissa and Rajasthan that are being prepared to increase women's knowledge of and access to available support services to deal with VAW.
