go back to a 2.4.x kernel. it will work then. for now this SEEMS to be a bug
with 2.6.x with illegal instruction vector handling under certain conditions. i
have punted off isolated test code that shows this to one of the kernel
maintainers i know and will see what comes of it :)

you have 2 choices - EXPLICITLY --disable-sse in configure OR go back to 2.4.x
kernels.
