I did an ls -al in the home directory and wiped out things like .gnome .gnome2_private .gnome_private .gnome2 .gnome-desktop and anything that looked gnome. Then I managed to restore GNOME to it's normal state. For some unknown reasons GNOME sometimes get "corrupted". Wiping one or two files restore it to it's original state. I don't know if there's a better method but it worked when I did it! With kind regards, Didier. --- PhD student.
