I fixed something like that in some guys' pc by wiping the gnome dot
files.

I did an ls -al in the home directory and wiped out things like

.gnome           .gnome2_private  .gnome_private
.gnome2          .gnome-desktop

and anything that looked gnome. Then I managed to restore GNOME to it's
normal state.

For some unknown reasons GNOME sometimes get "corrupted". Wiping one or
two files restore it to it's original state. I don't know if there's a
better method but it worked when I did it!
