Unless raster has said otherwise, automake 1.4 is still the "officially supported" automake version. So if it doesn't work with 1.4, it needs to be MADE to work with 1.4. Or raster needs to change his mind, one of the two.

Gentoo users do need to export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7, however I'm reasonbly sure that the default is not 1.4. As far as I know, the default is the newest version, which on my system is 1.8. At least, my system seems to use 1.8, if I don't export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7
