i was idling reading the thread, wasnt quite sure what you needed ...
if you add AC_CANONICAL_HOST to configure.ac, that'll give you access to
$host_cpu which would contain what you want ... then you could exploit crap
like this:
case $host_cpu in
i*86 )
feel my x86 voodoo
;;
x86_64 )
touch my 64bit monkey
;;
esac
another choice may be to use an ugly hack like ... CC -E | grep -E ..., but
you dont want to do that

thanks jerky, but i dont think ive ever suggested anything Gentoo outside of a
Gentoo list :p
