Cairo is at version 1.0 now. You might want to get that from CVS if
Gentoo doesnt provide it.

Except that the cairo engine doesn't work. But shouldn't PKG_CHECK_MODULES(CAIRO, cairo >= 1.0.0 in configure.in make sure that it only will build with version 1.0?
