The formatting style details, among other things tabs/spaces, were set up in an attempt to minimize the overall change caused by running indent on src/lib/*.c at that time. IIRC using spaces in stead of tabs resulted in slightly fewer changes.
Actually, I think the "original raster formatting style" is closer to the one in e16/e/.indent.pro, which specifies to use tabs.
