mouse,in / mouse,out animations for the unit selector and the rotate
control will be very hard. I tried to do this with 4 more states (+1 for
each orientation), and with some embryo handling to control which
orientation the ruler is currently at. But me writing embryo code is
mostly guesswork.

A label for the full size of the ruler, in whatever units it is
currently using, is very doable however. Maybe we should put some ideas
in a TODO or something. Two more ideas that are out there:

 - moving the mouse over a ruler slides a line and a label, which show
the value at the cursor
 - live update for the elicit magnifier, if a composite manager is
running.
