"diff" tries to be convenient, just like many text-based tools, so it hides different line-endings from you. "hexdump" works with bytes and doesn't try to make things easy for text files but gives you the whole truth. If you are on MS Windows and have TortoiseSVN installed, you can use it to diff files. If you then tell it to not ignore whitespace changes (in the setup) and tell it to display whitespace (button in the toolbar) it will also display the used line-ending style. I believe that '\n' is a downway arrow, '\r\n' is a bent arrow going down and then left, and '\r' is one going left.
