i think stuff in svn is ready for an alpha set of tarballs. i've checked it all dies distcheck cleanly. does anyone have any comments here to hold up an alpha? if not - i'll rev it all up to being in an alpha state - that means versions go from 1.0.999 to 1.1.0 for example.
