Conclusions: The cow magic debug is the cause for the slow-down, it's OK now. It's not my bug, as I've rebuilt everything and I still get the cow issues in valgrind. If you can't reproduce it, I'll just pin it on this stupid environment (ubuntu 12.04) they gave me at work.
