Okay, sounds like a plan. Would be nice to get to the ground of this -
but without breaking random builds.

It happened on both slaves, yeah. Also please note that when this
happened there were likely multiple builds running on each slave. As far
as I understand the check code they are using this file as a pipe. The
tests are executed and write their output to this file and after they
are finished the test runner collects the output from these files.

I don't know what else might be going on in /tmp at that point.
Hopefully your logging will help there.
