Your intentition was good to remove this ugly part. But as you figured aout yourself the new symbol was already in 1.9 and thus we can't remove it again. Only deprecate. This raises the question if we are to lax with new APIs being added. Do we want to have a list with new symbols added in this release that we can review before we are doing the final release? The abi comöiance checker Tom started to play with also lists new symbols. When we are going to look at it after the second merge window to loo for breaks we could also take that point to review new API's.
