it's a completely unknown problem. what happens is something goes "bad" inside
the vm's and it STAYS bad until you reboot the host. you do something like:

ls

and it hangs for 30 seconds or 40 seconds. if inside one of the vm's. you can
restart the vm's all you like and this continues to happen so it has something
to do with the host system and we have no idea why. the only solution i have
found so far is rebooting the host.

we can't sensibly have the thing auto-reboot as this is just asking for
trouble. i have personally spent many hours trawling around trying to find
what causes it. i've started and stopped vm's, i've trawled through logs. i
have found nothing. i know beber knows about this too and this has been
discussed on this mailing list too. beber has also dug into this and he
doesn't know either. we currently have nothing to go on.

so the ONLY solution is someone noticing and rebooting the host machine. i've
already done this half a dozen time this year or so. normally it's me that
catches it and does this it seems. it seems to kick in about once a month or
so. it isnt bad ENOUGH to sink a huge amount of effort into beyond what has
already been done, and it's really not sensibly automatically fixable. having a
host just decide to reboot itself whenever it sees some situation is going ot be
asking for reboot cycles and similar issues. so unless you have some idea of
what is causing this and how to fix it... the solution is "complain and someone
will reboot it" either irc or email or both. i was away from my desk at
meetings until 5pm yesterday thus why i didn't catch it.
