I'm having some trouble using xmkmf to install xkeycaps, but as far as I can tell it looks like a good program -- it should do the job.

Try googling for xkeycaps. Use it to make the option key produce the same as an Alt key (normally Alt_L and Meta_L (for the left), as well as being Mod1 IIRC). After you're done, run xmodmap with the file it created as an argument. (The program can be a bit difficult to work with sometimes, though, but I can't offer any help other than persist. It's a gui-based program but it isn't exactly intuitive unless you think the same way the xmodmap designers do.)
