Answers to these questions would be useful in fixing the problem. Personally, this sounds like the appropriate fix, as it allows packagers/distro maintainers to manually specify a value that makes sense for their distribution, while still providing a mostly working alternative for people who want to build it straight out of cvs. And don't we already not care about users who build out of cvs but don't read the user guide/faq/anything? (This is in the faq, right?) On a slightly related note, how do gdm and kdm get around this problem?
