Michael was right. It was a configuration problem with mutt.
In ~/.muttrc I had to do the following :
"color normal white default"
It is sorted out now. Thank You
Denis Fernandez : I am aslo using mocp and had the same problem with it.
But now that you mentioned themes (which I never really bothered with),
it looks much better.
