The shelf code is in an early state of development, it is intended to have different types of shelf that can live in some interesting places. Right now though, there is only the one type, the type that lives on the edge of the screen. You can have multiple shelves though, and make them arbitrary sizes, drop them behind everything else, make them transparent, and otherwise tweak them. On the other hand, there are a few modules that have not been converted to shelf style yet, and they can usually be put on the desktop. Keep in mind that it is likely that these older style modules will be converted in the future, maybe after there are other styles of shelf available.
