I did see the BumpTop TED talk.  I just booted up Windows to try it 
out.  I actually wrote up a criticism of it on my blog a while ago:

In short, they take the idea of physicality too far.  The piles and 
pinning things to walls is fairly useless and takes too long.  The 
animations are detrimental to the user experience.  I like animations in 
general, but it's a subtle kind of thing.  Apple does a good job using 
animation to impart knowledge, such as when you scroll in an iPhone and 
it bumps against the bottom, telling you you've reached the bottom.  
BumpTop is more like: "Whoo, you clicked something, LOOK AT THE ANIMATION!"

I really don't like the 3D approach.  I don't think it actually adds 
value.  I really only see 3D user interfaces being useful in data 
visualization, but maybe I'm wrong...

Some of the ideas are good and similar to mine.  Easily sending email 
attachments, sending things to Facebook, etc.  But I don't think the 
user should drag something to something else.  I think the user should 
click on the file and then explore what they can do with it.  The second 
is more discoverable, and I think a better design.

I'm also not particularly fond of the circular menu.  I think people are 
used to scanning up and down vertically, the circle navigation seems 
like bad UI to me.

Anyway, there's too much detail to go into, but thanks for pointing it 
out.  I didn't actually realize that it was available for use.  Also, 
the commercialization turns me off.

On that subject, if the project I'm describing gets off the ground I 
think the best support model would be to have the default online storage 
component be a subscription service where the profits go to the 
non-profit development organization.  Of course, you could use other 
online storage services by installing a plugin, but only stingy geeks 
(most of us) would bother to do it.  I think the majority of people 
would be willing to pay $10 a month to store all of the stuff they care 
about and have powerful permission controls on it.

Also, something along the lines of what Ubuntu or Redhat do with 
enterprise support could work as well.
