ok, forget about the places module as it looks like my problem is not
related to it in any way.

I've nuked my e's config, just to be sure, started with a fresh config
and configured efm to display icons and hal-icons on the desktop, and
also to automatically mount devices on insertion, but still no luck...
whenever I plug in my usb stick e_dbus_hal, started in a terminal,
recognizes it but efm doesn't react at all... neither it displays an
icon for the removable media, nor it mounts it.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something obvious, but what? :(
