I think I found what causes/affects it!
I prefer Home/Root/Temp desktop icons to be shown on the bottom left of the
desktop, ordered vertically. So one of the first things to do on a new .e
setup is to drag the icons to the bottom left of the desktop. Starting afresh
I noticed that at some point of me setting up my gadgets and what have you the
dreaded scroll bar appeared.
I hadn't at that point linked it to the destop icons of these directories.
However, pushing any of the icons (e.g. for Home directory) below the notional
line of the bottom shelf, immediately caused the scroll bad to disappear as
the icon of Home was displaced upwards to clear the shelf.
So I'm assuming that the vertical scroll bar has something to do with the way
e17 allocates screen space for the desktop icons and whether it thinks that
more than the physical dimensions of the screen is needed (I'm guessing wildly
here). Pushing an icon below the shelf allocated area at the bottom of the
screen causes the desktop to be redrawn and the vertical screen dimension
redefined. Hope this makes some sense to a dev ...
