it's something like xdg-open, then yes.

I've also used some idea from xfce (exo-open) that supports starting
the default application for some stuff like browser, mail, terminal,
image, video and audio. It's like forcing a mime-type, except it also
understands $BROWSER and for terminal it will search for
"GenericName=Terminal" or "Category=TerminalEmulator"
