I wonder if Jeff's problem relates to this observation I just made.
Some USB sticks will not show up on the desktop when plugged in.
These are USB sticks which have been formated as a large floppy disk.
When they are plugged in they show, e.g. /dev/sdb, not /dev/sdb1:

The device can be mounted with pmount or even using the KDE/Dolphin
GUI, and show under /media, but it will not show on the e17 desktop.

Other USB sticks that have proper partitions on them and are
identified as e.g. /dev/sdb1 do show up on the e17 desktop as
expected:
