This may be rubbish, but have you tried tampering with the various compositor 
module settings ?
Like lowering memory / timeouts and whatnot
I haven't had the excact same problem, but then I don't use firefox, or 
menus... :)
I did notice some wierd behaviour with certain drivers at some point, nouveau 
would flash junk at me, or change chars into blurs. I remember nvidia used to 
make my chrome browser semi-transparent. My weapon of choice was 
ctrl+alt+whatever makes E restart.
Are you all using the same graphics chip manufacturer / drivers perchance ?
