On most KDE based distro's and some others you can install sni-qt which 
will allow kde / Qt apps I believe including Dropbox and skype to work 
installing the python appindicator packages will also fix a few more 
apps. On openSUSE for example as far as I am aware the only app that I 
use that hasn't got systray support is hexchat.
