E is drawing it.. but it should not be - it does not do it here or on any of my
machines.

if you have a custom theme - it could redefine what a borderless style looks
like to have a shadow. there are settings you can mess with in
settings->look->compositor-advanced->styles with the default one used and under
"edit window matches" ... if you messed with something here it could do this.

either that or gtk has changed and stops saying "please make me borderless and
ARGB". borderless is what it's mwm hint will be for like run xprop and clikc
on the window:

_MOTIF_WM_HINTS(_MOTIF_WM_HINTS) = 0x2, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0

alongside a bunch of other properties...
