Yeah, these optimus devices are such a pain.

I've found out.
Long time since I last used gdm.
I forgot that I had to enable the optimus stuff for it, not from .xinitrc

it was not calling for
$ xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
$ xrandr --auto
