Greetings everyone.

I sent this mailing list some info about a problem we were experiencing
between secured AP RBT 4102 and Toshiba Laptops with the Intel 2200 wifi
interface.

I must inform anyone interested that I found a solution to the issue. I
tried installing a different wireless device (SMC 802.11b/g usb card) and the
problem was persistent... meaning it's not the Intel 2200BG on its own. There
were three different firmware versions installed on our three APs. The one
having the firmware version 1.0.26 had somehow frequent problems with these
chips, the one having the 1.2.21 version had them all the time, the one having
the 1.1.51 version had none of the problems (although it was bought on another
occasion, compared to the other two).

So the solution that worked for me was replacing (even the one having
the latest firmware version 1.2.21) with the 1.1.51. Suddenly, everyone (even
the laptops with the Intel 2200) connects automatically, with the WPA
configuration, with no further hassle.

Although solved, I thought I should share this info. Thanks for the help
troubleshooting.

Subject: RE: [enterasys] Connection problems with AP 4102 and Intel NICs

Unfortunately, the problem is not that simple. We have 5 units of the same
laptop Toshiba Satellite M40, all bought within the same semester, and they all
show the simptoms. Every other laptop (especially the newer ones) connect even
before the user can check the wireless conectivity. All the "wireless working"
laptops are using windows's Zero Configuration Service to manage the wireless
conection. And that's why we deployed the Wireless Network through Group Policy.

Also... within range there is another wireless access point, an old Cisco
Model, 3XX series, that the users can "see" and that they could use, if it
wasn't so far (the strength and quality drops a lot), and... it's an 802.11b
AP, so no more than 11Mb top.

Thanks for the inputs. If you have any further, please post.

With my best regards,
Cristiano Rodrigues

By WiFi button, I assume you mean the antenna switch on Toshiba laptops.
Failure to turn the switch on is the most frequent reason for no wireless
that I have seen. Or, the switch may be non-functional.

Other things to consider:

If this is a single laptop and not every Satellite M40, I would be suspicious
that the WiFi card is broken. Try swapping with a known good card.

Are the antenna leads connected to the 2200bg card?

What program is managing the wireless connection, Windows native or the Intel
supplied utility? If one utility is managing but you look at the other, no
networks will be seen, but it should tell you that it is not managing
connections.
