That's very interesting and odd. When you say they don't work, do you mean very poor performance? I noticed all antennas that are supported by 1602 are 50 ohms, could it be possible that the antennas you tried were not 50 ohms? No matter what though, even if you used a paperclip, you should get some kind of signal, otherwise I'd suspect maybe it's a config/defect issue.
