Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
update-rc.d only manages System V style init scripts - the smbd and nmbd services in Ubuntu are managed by upstart so this won't work. /etc/init.d/smbd|nmbd is just a symbolic link to upstart-job and is provided for legacy compatibility. To disable upstart configurations from starting automatically please follow: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#disabling-a-job-from-automatically- starting ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server/Client Support Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu.
