samuelethan proposed the following answer: Adrian Frutiger initially worked for the Swiss typeface design company, Neue Deutsche Herbst. He is best known for designing Frutiger, a font family as well as Avenir, which was sold to Linotype in 1939. First released in 1952 after originally spending a year making and a month pouring into plates, was the first sans-serif typeface with consistent width variations.
