> Do OE Scripts work with Entourage? I couldn't get them to.
I ran into this same question over the weekend, and, since I couldn't find
an answer anywhere, I decided to try it out.
Here's the deal: The Entourage scripting dictionary seems to be a superset
of the OE scripting dictionary, which means that all scripts should work
fine, except for one thing: The scripts are looking for the application
"Outlook Express."
It is possible to confuse your computer into finding Entourage every time it
looks for OE, but not easy, and probably not advisable. A better thing to do
is to edit each script to replace all references to application "Outlook
Express" with application "Microsoft Entourage" (and maybe update all
references in prompts and dialogs as well, but that's just up to personal
preference).
Every script I use worked after I made that change.
So, how do you do this?
Well, you can use the AppleScript Editor (which should be somewhere in Apple
Extras on your hard drive, or your MacOS CD if you did a minimal install),
but this is a major pain. Mainly because there's no search and replace--or
even plain old find....
So, a better solution is to download a different script editor and use that
to edit your scripts.
I use Smile--mainly because it's free, but it's also pretty good. The only
problem I've ever had with it is that it keeps wanting to revert from
English to French on me.... If you want Smile, download it at
http://www.tandb.com.au/smile/.
Main Event Scripter is a little better, but it's $200, which is $200 more
than Smile (although, from what I remember, you can download a demo, which
doesn't save, but which lets you drag your completed script over in its
entirety to a window in Apple Script Editor and save it there...).
FaceSpan is great for building GUIs, but its script editor is barely better
than Apple's, and it's also $200.
I'm sure there are other possibilities out there, but those are the only
ones I've tried.
The ideal solution would be to download (or write) a script that took every
file in Script Menu Items, copied it to Entourage Script Menu Items, then
did the search-and-replace for you. If nobody else has written such a thing
and it's needed, I'll volunteer.
Or just wait for each developer to update her own scripts. Most of them seem
to be on this list and/or the mac-oe-talk list, and announce when they've
made Entourage versions.
> If not, is
> there a web site dedicated to Entourage Scripts?
Paul Berkowitz has posted his homepage (which has over 60 scripts on it) to
this list before: http://homepage.mac.com/berkowit28
I wish the list archives were a little more searchable, but try reading
through the archives for more posts like his....
