I think I would like your original idea better. Is this how it would go?:
Once sorted by zip field and toggled back to the address book (via the
two-line script you mentioned) I could then sort by category and print via
George's multienvelope script maintaining the zip sort. Correct or not?

Do what you think might benefit the biggest number of users and I'll adapt.
