There really isn’t a way.  Only the messages you actually read are downloaded (only the headers of the others are).  I think (but someone from MS can confirm) that the messages are deleted from the cache when they are no longer on the news server.

You can control-click on the server icon and select “Empty Cache” but you will also lose track of the read/unread status.
