I'm constantly toggling offline status and have never had your problem.

Copy (not move) the Microsoft Internet Library (v5.03) from your Extensions
folder to the Office subfolder of the Microsoft Office 2001 folder, and
those crashes will stop. (And I assume you've already got rid of Windows
Media Plug-In from the IE Plug-Ins folder, if you had it, or you'd be
getting a lot more crashes.)
