FWIW my archive identity is 163MB. I also created a separate archive
identity for work related mail that�s 132MB.

Since these Identities are rarely open when a crash occurs they are less
likely to be subject to problems. Plus it's easy to keep a backup. I archive
once a month and then create a backup of the archive. It's hard to loose
this way.

If you have LOTS of mail, I suggest creating a new Identity every year to
reduce size.

Sounds like you are not dragging into an identity before burning. I don't
understand what/why you are burning folders of MBOX files.

The real chore is backing up daily mail. Options for this are to leave mail
on the server for X days. Then on the X day, do a backup of your MUD folder.
There is a script to backup MUD  that is  fast. I used to have it in my
startup folder under OS 9, but now that I'm in X, I never startup to run it.
