Hi all, As promised, here is a follow-up to my investigation of MLP for Office:mac v. X. The Mactopia website finally details the MLP <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/officex/ork/default.asp?EmbFName=Office_Licens ing.asp>. See bullet point 1.
As of this morning, the MLP is not yet available from <http://shop.microsoft.com>, nor is it available from the Mactopia site. So I phoned MS Sales for more info. Here's what I found out: As stated on the Mactopia site, the MLP allows two copies of Office X to run simultaneously; thus solving the dilemma many of us face with Office X's network probing scheme. (i.e., you could run E'rage on one machine and Word on another.) Because the MLP is not listed on the shop.microsoft.com site, the Sales Rep spoke about a similar MLP for XP. For XP, the MLP is only a $10 savings from the list price of the full retail Office price! Let's hope this is not the case for the MLP for Office X. The Rep also stated that if I ordered the MLP through shop.microsoft.com, S&H charges would be assessed. I was ultimately advised that it would be cheaper to grab a copy of the shelves of a local reseller. This is unfortunate, and confusing, if indeed the same price scheme will apply to MLP for Office X. Purchasing a second license would, in effect, be more expensive than the initial upgrade from 2001 to v.X. This severely cripples home users -- and dissuades them from purchasing a legal, second license. I will keep you apprised of any additional information I find... Although, at this point, it seems like a fruitless endeavor to pursue the MLP.
