That's the way it is supposed to happen. The "attachments" in a digest are
not really taking up double space; they are just meant as handles to be able
to quickly jump to any message in the digest: Click on an attachment, open
that message in its own window.

The digests that <don't> show up with attachments are actually in some
non-standard digest format. I know! Most digests seem to be "non-standard."

Nope. The guys spent so much time developing these slick new icons, and you
already want to change them? (You could probably find some way with a
ResEdit-like utility...but I don't think that one exists yet for OS X,
although I could be wrong.)
