It's not completely brain-dead. As long as you're logged into your EarthLink/Mindspring account, you can sent whatever you're client is able to sent through EarthLink's SMTP server. They do block you from using their SMTP server if you are not currently logged in as an EarthLink (or Mindspring) user. This is to keep non-EarthLink users from sending SPAM through EarthLink's SMTP servers. They do make provisions for people who must use their EarthLink email through another access point (like from work) though.
