As someone who uses QuarkXpress every day of my working life perhaps I
should jump in here.

Yes, there is QX on Windows and it can happily read Mac-originated documents
(and vice-versa). You MUST ensure that the filename of your QX document ends
with .qxd otherwise Windows will not recognise it (and QX on your recipients
PC will not be able to open it). As I rule even though most of my QX jobs
stay on Mac systems I have for years named all my jobs with this suffix.

Quark has a helpful tech note on this issue at:
<http://www.quark.com/support/techinfo/technotes.jsp?idx=16>

The issue of suffixes is crucial when sending files to PC. Word Documents
must end in .doc, Photoshop documents .psd, TIFFs as .tif, etc etc - all the
stuff that until OS X we Mac-heads could happily live without.

As for PDFs, there is an option in Distiller to make your PDFs ASCII
compatible. I recommend using this option if you know the PDF is going to be
emailed as it can prevent corruption en route, so I've been told. Typefaces
may be changing if you have not embedded them in the PDF. Acrobat will
change things like Helvetica for Arial, and Times for Times New Roman, when
going from Mac to PC. (I have a Job Options settings file for PDFs which I
intend to email which has ASCII format and Embed all Fonts checked on.) I
know of very rare occasions where Postscript fonts have plain refused to
embed in a PDF and my only conclusion was that they were corrupt. You can
check a PDF's embedded fonts by going to Document Properties in Acrobat.

Compression-wise: AppleDouble has never failed me yet. Unless you have
tampered with your prefs (Mail & News Prefs > Compose > Attachments) I
believe this is the default setting for attachments. But if you need to use
other compression formats to send to a PC, Aladdin's Stuffit Deluxe can
compress files so they open on PCs using either a .sit (requires Stuffit for
Windows), .zip (requires UnZip or similar) or self-contained executable like
an .sea on the Mac. Alternatively zip it using Aladdin's DropZip utility
(free last time I looked).

HTH. Let me know how you get on.
