I recall reading that there was a problem with changes made in Internet
Explorer taking if more than one MS internet application was open. It has
been a while since I read this and I may not have understood correctly to
begin with.

It went something along the lines that each MS internet application copies
the file type information for its own use when it opens. If you change it in
Internet Explorer while another MS internet Application (Entourage or
Outlook Express) is open, there is a good chance that when you switch to the
other MS application, it will restore the file mappings. In any event one
was to make sure when changing file mappings using Internet Explorer that it
was the only internet application open. Then after making the changes quit
Explorer and then one could go and open and use what ever one wished to use.
