My journalistic instincts have spurred me to do a little investigation. Not that I use
them any more, but categories are apparently supported natively by Palm's Date Book
application. Here's Pimlico Software's statement on the subject (from the DateBk5 FAQ):

"DateBk5 uses the IDENTICAL Databases to the built-in Todo and Datebook applications,
so BY DEFINITION it is 100% compatible with any desktop or server application that
properly synch's with the standard Datebook and Todo Databases in the Palm
Organizer... Categories are a STANDARD feature of ALL Palm OS database, irregardless
of whether the associated application chooses to make use of them or not...

"There are advanced features in DateBk5, such as categories, timezones, alarms on
ToDo's and appointments spanning midnight which are typically NOT supported on the
desktop either because the desktop lacks that functionality, or because the conduit
does not know how to map the functionality. We were pleased to see that both Chapura
and DataViz have released versions of their conduits which support DateBk5 categories
with MS Outlook and hope to encourage other conduit writers to provide similar
functionality. DateBk5 categories are also supported by GroupSync."

Just for the record, apart from the conduits implied above (PocketMirror and Desktop
to Go on Windows), I've noticed on the Mac the following conduits also sync Date Book
categories with desktop applications: Now Up-to-Date's conduit, Palm Desktop 4.0's
conduit, Chronos Group Organizer/Personal Organizer's conduit, and QueueSync (I think.
I only used it a couple of times).

As far as I can see, the list of conduits for synchronising PIMs with Palm's Date Book
that don't use categories consists of... Entourage's conduit.

So assuming Pimlico is to be believed on the subject, and given that Palm's own
application supports categories (and Palm has little incentive to go out of its way to
develop workrounds to its own APIs so that third-party Palm OS software can
synchronise properly with its free _Macintosh_ software), I guess there is a conduit
API somewhere that allows category synchronisation. It's just a question of finding it.

We'll have to see what iSync gets up to when it comes out, but that poor old Entourage
conduit must be feeling awful lonely by itself right now...
