This problem has been mentioned many times on this list.

It is a bug in Jaguar that still has not been fixed in 10.2.2.

The problem is that when your computer or monitor goes to sleep, apps that
launch during that time are given bogus information (I think the OS tells
the apps that the screen resolution is 0x0 or something.)

The workaround for your problem is to turn off energy saver on your computer
and pester Apple about how lame it is that this problem has not been fixed
since 10.2.

Ironically this was fixed in 10.1.5.
Even more ironically, this affects Apple's own iCal.

Go figure.
