Title: Re: Severe crashing (was Ways to speed up Entourage X GUI?)
You may have corrupt messages, or you may simply be overloading the MBOX-routine. Make a new Entourage folder. Select the oldest 1000 or so messages in your Sent Items folder: they're probably already sorted by Sent or Received, and the bottom left hand corner of the main window will tell you how many you have selected. You use shift-click on two messages to select all messages in between, so play around until you've got about 1000. (If you have lots of large attachments, this will still be pretty enormous, so you might want to use a script to delete attachments, or just select 500. But 1000 should be fine.) Now drag this new folder to the desktop or elsewhere on your hard disk. You shouldn't crash. (If you do, try just the top 500 or bottom 500 of the original 1000 and keep doing this until you find a corrupt message.) Now move the Entourage folder, or just its contents (command-A) to the Deleted Items folder, then empty it (Tools menu/Run Schedule/): you also don't want to have to try to empty 9000 at once.
Repeat this process, renaming the "transfer folder" each time (add 1,2,3, etc. to its name) until you have only the most recent 500 or whatever you want to keep in your main identity. Repeat for Inbox, etc. Whenever you might need to check an old message, just drag an MBOX back in, or to a special "Archives" identity you can keep with the same mail accounts as your regular identity. There are fancier way to do this, scripts with methods for recreating "Sent" status, correct accounts etc. (ask), and also Archiving apps like eMessage Archiver. But this homey method will do for most people. When finished, as a once-only, you can do a Typical Rebuild to compact your database just this once, if you never intend to let it get near that size again.
If you continue to have crashing, do an Advanced Rebuild before doing anything else. (Hold down option key at launch at choose Advanced.) You have the latest updates installed, I can see, so you'll be OK.

Subject: Severe crashing (was Ways to speed up Entourage X GUI?)
I'm experiencing my first real Entourage mess. After reading the responses
to my slower and slower E'rage X GUI, I decided to archive some of my 9,000
email addresses. I went to www.applescriptcentral.com, did a search for
'archive', and found Barry Wainwright's Export Folders script. In reading
his text explanatory file, I realized that I could archive E'rage X folders
by simply dragging them to the desktop. Since my Sent folder was the one
that was taking 10 seconds to draw itself, I dragged that one to the
desktop. Entourage crashed. I repeated this a 4 times, tried restarting,
doing a advanced rebuild, and still crashing. I tried running Barry's
script, and still crashing.
I've had Entourage since it first came out, but I'm only 3 weeks since
switching to OS X, so I don't know yet what files/ prefs to delete in doing Office/Entourage repairs like this.
By the way, I decided to see if it was all my existing data base that were causing problems. So I switched identities, created a Test Identity, and wow, what a difference. Just like the old zippy OS 9 version. So I'm convinced that I've got some major corruption in my current Identity.
My question: what would you all suggest for fixing this? I used to have my diagnostics down in 9, but again, I'm so new that I haven't a clue right now how to get Entourage unbugged.
( I'm on Jaguar 10.2.3, with Entourage 10.1.1 Service Release 1,
on a 933 Mhz, with 1 Gig Ram. My Office X Identities folder weighs in at 630
Megs (my total MUD is 1.1 Gigs) ; I have about 9,000 messages total)
