Somehow I am thinking the same thing. I use two IMAP accounts regularly, and they work terrifically with Entourage. I've never had a problem connecting to them unless it was a server problem, and even then I've never seen any kind of "mailbox corruption".
I suggest that in the meantime you sign up for a free IMAP account from My Real Box <http://www.myrealbox.com/> and give it a try with Entourage. Keep in mind that it occasionally goes down for testing and upgrades, so it's probably a server problem rather than Entourage problem if you get an error message when trying to access the account. It works perfectly for me. Also, if you have a .Mac membership, you could set your account up as IMAP and see how that goes.
