I may have just answered my own question. After applying the Office X 10.1.2 update to the Powerbook, it appears that I can now run Office apps on both machines simultaneously. I can think of some possible explanations. Perhaps the two installs need to be at the same version number. Or the 10.1.2 update contains more current machine ID information.
