I may have just answered my own question.  After applying the Office X
10.1.2 update to the Powerbook, it appears that I can now run Office apps on
both machines simultaneously.

I can think of some possible explanations.  Perhaps the two installs need to
be at the same version number.  Or the 10.1.2 update contains more current
machine ID information.  Or there might have been a bug in an earlier
version of Office X.
