I've not heard of the problem, unfortunately, so can't offer a solution.
Diagnostic questions and comments:

The specific error message from Word would probably help pinpoint the
problem. Please obtain it and post it.

The sending options should have no effect whatsoever on the ability to open
and read attachments.

What other applications, besides Word, give her attachment problems? For
instance, if someone sends an attached text file, does TextEdit open
properly and read it? How about Excel spreadsheets, or other types of files
such as .sit (Stuffit) files?

Who is sending the files, and from what operating system? Are they PC Word
files or Mac Word files? What version of Word created the files? What
version of Word does she have (I would presume it is Word v X 10.1.4, but I
don't like to make presumptions)?

Regarding the failure of double-clicking: Before we infer a generic problem,
try restarting the computer; that might cure it. Also, try it in a separate
identity that has no third-party add-ons that might be interfering with
keystroke capture, such as QuicKeys or Keyboard Maestro or CopyPaste. Since
the Open button does work, my guess is that the dbl-click failure is a
separate problem.

You mention that she is using an IMAP account. I'm not familiar with IMAP
since I don't use it, but I wonder: Does she need to fully download the
message before she can open attachments?
