Well, one day people decided that typewriters were outdated and started using proportional fonts (which tend to be more readable) and word processors to write their letters. Just because some implementers of HTML mail viewers have permitted complete and uncontrolled access to the users' machines doesn't mean that all HTML messages and HTML viewers are bad.
