I know this sounds strange, but have you tried just opening the file? The problems normally arise from having an old version of Word and trying to open a doc created by a newer version. If this doesn't work MacLinkPlus is probably what you want - It is a whiz with all sorts of file. It came bundled with Appleworks a long time ago, but I think you can get a demo version.
