It's a separate app that checks to see if there are new updates for Office
2004 (like v11.0.1, 11.0.2, 11.1.0, etc. when they are eventually released).
I.e. it's just like Apple's Software Update but for Office. If you
double-click it it will bring up a window (really it's prefs) that - like
Software Update - lets you turn off the Automatic Weekly checking (set by
default) and either do it manually only or an a different schedule.

In order that it itself not be replaced or removed by an update, it's better
that it be outside the Microsoft Office 2004 folder. You could keep it (and
Microsoft Office 2004 folder too, for that matter) in an ~/Applications/
folder with an alias or symlink to ?Applications, but that's not what
you're asking.

Why don't you check the Help for "AutoUpdate" and read it? The Help is
altogether much, much improved for Office 2004.

If you do, another one will just be made in the default location. Try moving
it and making an alias to the correct location. That will probably work.
But "Office Projects" can be very large if you ever make a project. Why
can't you just leave it where it is?
